“Coal Collections” Free Noon Lecture Series – September through March

The Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University and the Place Studies program of the Bucknell Center for Sustainability and the Environment, are pleased to announce a year-long series of events related to anthracite coal.
“Coal Collections: Local, National and International Stories” will include a series of free Noon lectures, as follows. All are free and all will take place in the Weis Center Atrium Lobby.

Overview of the social and environmental histories of PA’s anthracite coal region.
Bucknell in the Coal Region: Community-Based Research
Thursday, October 27, Noon
A panel of students, faculty, and community partners will discuss incorporating the anthracite coal region into student learning through classes and summer projects.
Molly Maguires in the Pennsylvania Coal Region
Thursday, November 17, Noon
A panel of community members and faculty discuss the Molly Maguire secret society and nationalism related to the Irish diaspora.

G.C. Waldrep, Associate Professor of English, will interview Julia Wolfe, composer of Anthracite Fields, Laurie McCants, Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble and advisor to the project, and Beth Willer, conductor for the Weis Center performance.
